card no. 40 — Hope, after Anne Lamott

Vincent van Gogh, Almond Blossoms, 1890
A note on the name

The first tree to bloom, before any other dares.

Vincent van Gogh painted Almond Blossoms in February 1890, in Saint-Rémy, while recovering in the asylum. It was a gift for his newborn nephew — a small, tender act of faith that spring was coming.

Fragile blossoms on bare branches, against a turquoise sky — hope made from a place of suffering. We took the name because the inner life, too, asks for a little courage to begin.

"I never finished a journal. So I built one I'd actually open. Five minutes, no blank page."

— The Maker, Istanbul
